BotW - "Creator" by Santogold
It's the moment you've been waiting all summer for, Best of the Week is back to comfort you through the upcoming lonely nights of winter. If you've never read this feature on the TVSM Blog, where the heck have you been? No, in all honesty the entire point of Best of the Week is to name the best music uses of the past week from many different TV shows (the ones I watch anyway). Then, at the end of the TV season, I go through all the posts and pick the best uses as nominees for our TVSM Awards. That's it! Or not. I also wrap up other songs and my favorites that I highly recommend you check out. But anywho, let's get down to the meat of the post.
Two weeks have actually passed since the TV season began. Gossip Girl has been in fine form as usual and 90210 has been a serious disappointment, both in music and in everything else that makes up a TV show. Musically, the show picks great songs but they don't really fit all that well. There aren't any uses that stand out as great or even very good, they just act as filler. That said, I'm not going to say much about the show thus far.
Speaking of new shows, Privileged definitely gets my vote for best new show this far into the season. Not only was I rather entertained watching the show, but I also loved the music selection. It was by far the best overall use of music in an episode I've seen in quite some time. I really loved the fact that the music was all very happy and optimistic sounding which made it fit perfectly with Megan's personality. Highlights included: "Love Today" (>/+) by Mika as Charlie critiques Megan's story and smoke comes from the apartment, "Tres Tres Chic" (>/+) by Mocean Worker when Megan arrives in Palm Springs, "Intelligentactile 101" (>/+) by Jesca Hoop as Megan gets tased by Sage (not cool bro), and my new favorite song "Pony" (>/+) by Erin McCarley when Megan arrives at the party (seriously, this girl has talent).
Gossip Girl gets the big prize though. But first, the other highlights: "Boy In A Rock And Roll Band" (>/+) by The Pierces when Dan & Serena awake on the beach together and "Tell Me A Lie" (>/+) by The Fratellis as Serena & Dan take the bus home. The best use this week was "Creator" (>/+) by Santogold when Blair finds Nate & Catherine making out in the library. Why you ask? I liked the use because it was so rough and surprising as a song pick which fit the surprise of Blair as she found out what Nate had gotten himself into (hehe). The scene and music choice completely reminded me of another TVSM nominated song use: "U.R.A. Fever" (>/+) by The Kills as Serena confesses to Blair her secret. It also had the rough feeling and surprise element.
What were your favorite uses or songs this week? Send me your comments and I might post them next week.
