BotW - "Mercy" by Duffy
I don't have a lot to say this week about music highlights, mainly because I'm still running behind. I finally watched the Grey's Anatomy season finale today and can now make a reasonable judgment for best music use. Why am I so far behind you may ask (or maybe you don't)? Two words: Red Wings. Hockey is the only sport I care anything about and they're on their way to another Stanley Cup victory. It doesn't get any more exciting than that if you ask me!
It was so much more exciting than the lame Gossip Girl finale with forced relationship mix-ups and a quick resolution to the whole Georgina thing. Then there was the better, but very similar closing to Grey's Anatomy with everyone kissing and mixing up relationships. What the heck happened to the writers now that the whole strike thing is over? If all they were all going to do is copy the same plot points for every show, I'm not sure the whole strike thing was worth it. On the other hand, Reaper continues to build on its potential and I cannot wait for another season next year. It was a rough year and I just hope the next one is going to improve, it's not like it's going to take a lot of effort to surpass.
Enough of my opinions on the finales, what about the music? I happened to catch the end of Ugly Betty and really enjoyed the use of "Jump" (>/+) by Madonna at the end as everyone was moving on to new things. It reminded me of The Hills use of Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocketful Of Sunshine" (>/+) at the end of season three's first part when everyone was going their own way. Grey's Anatomy, however, really felt more like it was cleaning house and starting fresh with the finale. Even though I thought it felt contrived with all the kissing at the end, I like where the show is going for the most part. Meredith is finally dealing with issues and I'm actually a little excited about the McDreamy/Meredith relationship again. The best song use of many, though, was "Mercy" by Duffy. I can't recall at the moment, but I believe I called this one a few weeks ago. "Mercy" aired on Smallville and The Hills a couple of weeks ago and now on Grey's Anatomy. I liked how it fit lyrically and the mood of Callie and Sloane's time in bed and the discussion between the gang. Nice use and keep it up for next year, Grey's Anatomy!
Coming in the next few weeks, I'll be announcing the nominees for this summer's TV Show Music Awards. If you've got an opinion on what song you'd like to have nominated, or if you have some ideas for awards, let me know in the comments. You can check out last year's nominees and winners also.
