2007 TV Show Music Awards
Here are the winners of the first annual TV Show Music Awards. I've put a lot of thought into these and some of them came pretty close to winning. But, these are the cream of the crop and I hold the winners in the highest regard.
Best Song Use:
- Patrick Park - Life Is A Song - The OC (watch)
There is nothing else to say other than this is the perfect ending to The OC. It wraps up in a perfect circle with Ryan helping a kid lost, one like himself four years ago. I will admit that this was a close race for best song. I really liked all five of these tracks and all of them stand out in my memory, which in my opinion is the key to perfect music placement. If I had to pick a different one, I probably would have gone with The Midway State's "Unaware" (watch). The tone of the song is absolutely a wonderful match for the scene.
Best Song Use - Humor:
- Zach Braff & Donald Faison - Everything Comes Down To Poo - Scrubs (watch)
Scrubs had it all the way with this track and that scene with the janitor (watch @ 3:30). But come on, is there anything better than an original song that is so freaking funny? Nothing could beat this one.
Best Song Use - Sadness Scene:
- Radiohead - Like Spinning Plates - The OC (watch @ 2:45)
This was another difficult choice. The thing about this song is that it is so well placed that you could think it was the score if you didn't know any better. The fact that it blends in so well is what makes this track naturally the best. Otherwise, I would have gone with Brown Recluse Sings' "Western Meadowlark" (watch). A wonderful track that had a great twist in the lyrics right when Veronica and the audience realize this is a dream (or nightmare as the case may be).
Best Song Use - Happiness Scene:
- Annuals - Fair - Veronica Mars (watch)
This one almost killed me. It seems that I wanted to recognize all of the songs listed for best song use in this category. Once again, The Midway State's "Unaware" (watch) is pitch perfect for its scene. Patrick Park's "Life Is a Song" (watch) is also one of the best uses ever. But, in terms of happiness, none could compare to Veronica and Logan getting back together again (at least I think). After a season full of ups and downs, this provided a great buildup and a surprising turn. The music helped make the scene and I love it to death.
Best Overall Song Use by a Show:
- The OC
The OC has it down to an art (or had it down to an art I should say). What better way to honor one of the best in music placement than to honor them with this award. Now if only I had a statuette that was as cool as the Dundees to give out.
