Kate Havnevik Interview

From December 2006

  1. We'll start off easy: Dog or cat?
Cat! A stripy black and grey cat with white socks. They just sleep, eat and have kittens, suits me, and they are beautiful and elegant!
  2. Off the top of your head, name a song that you've been listening to the most recently.
A song called "Du E For Fin For Mig" by a Swedish band called Dungen. The song title means "You Are Too Good For Me". It's a lovely song! It's about a guy who is in love with this girl who really is above him, but he still wants her and doesn't give up. I have also been listening to Joy Divisons song called "Love Will Tear Us Apart." A great, great song!
  3. Do you ever watch television? If so, what's your favorite show & why?
Oh yes, I sometimes watch TV. I love The Simpsons! I also love great documentaries and nature/animal programs by David Attenborough. Oh and I love Little Britain & Jackass.
  4. Were you excited to learn your music would be aired on Grey's Anatomy?
Oh yes, very excited. I had already had some songs in some other shows and at first I hadn't heard of Grey's Anatomy, but then I learned about the show and was very excited indeed.
  5. What impact has it had?
It's been great. To have any music in TV or Film is great for a musician as it introduces you to a bigger audience. Grey's Anatomy has obviously become such a hugely popular show with a big following, and as it also releases soundtracks it is a very music-friendly show. They seem to pick the music they use with care.
  6. When people listen to your music, how do want them to react to it?
I have no specific wish of how I want my audience to react my music. I think it is wonderful if people have different experiences listening to it. Songs and music can be interpreted in many different ways, that's the beauty of it.
  7. Have you always known that you'd want to create music?
In a way I have. I started writing music when I was 13. I started off making little piano pieces and I would play them over and over again, so my family would go around humming my melodies. Then I also started writing on the guitar. A few years later I started writing lyrics and creating songs. First in Norwegian and later in English, as I moved to England to study. I have always enjoyed making things.
  8. Have any funny stories about performing or touring on the road?
Well, the Hotel Café tour this year was great fun! I only did a week on the tour but got to take part in the Hotel Café touring lifestyle. And what a lifestyle that is! As I was heavily jetlagged, and the diet on the bus mainly was Jack'n-Coke, Vodka'n-Orange (oh and the odd sandwich), some of my memories are a bit blurred. But the gigs were great and they got weirder and weirder. And at one point the huge Hotel Café Banner fell down in the middle of a show and the MD (musical director) Mr. Kanakis just wrapped it around him like a skirt or a sarong and kept on playing. It looked ridiculous, but it was a great moment! We also had technical issues that same night so it all went a bit pear shaped, but it was fun! And the audience loved it!
  9. You're stuck on the proverbial island and of course there's only one CD with you. Which one would it be?
I think it would be a Leonard Cohen "Best Of" CD. His songs are timeless and beautiful with great lyrics!
  10. What are your hopes for the coming year?
My hopes are that I will have my health and my sanity! To see more of my family (not looking good as I will spend a lot of time in the USA). To record a new album, can't wait! Also, it would be nice if the world would settle into a more peaceful state too.
