Cowboy Racer Interview
From August 2006
- We'll start off easy... Salty or sweet snacks? Salty all the way. I'm Dutch, my heritage is salty sweets, I can't escape or help it.
- Off the top of your head, name a song that you've been listening to the most recently. Elliot Smith "Son of Sam," Nouvelle Vague "Killing Moon," Hot Chip "Over and Over," Madonna "I Love New York" (can't do just the one).
- Do you ever watch television? If so, what's your favorite show & why? Do I ever watch TV??? I have to confess it's my only way of escaping. That and being anywhere in the country and watching birds on a lake. My favourite TV show ever is Friends, but I have a big soft spot for Curb Your Enthusiasm, and for my sins, Big Brother. Friends is my top choice because even though I have seen all the episodes about a million times they still make me laugh. The comic timing of the actors and the writing is unequaled in any other TV Show as far as I'm concerned, and I think I can find a little bit of myself, my friends and family in just about any of the characters, even Joey.
- Were you excited to learn your music would be aired on Grey's Anatomy? Yes that was top news, and wholly unexpected of course. I'm a big fan of the show. Hmm should have mentioned it above shouldn't I.
- What impact has it had? A lot of doors have opened. Radio in LA is playing our EP and it's great to get feedback from people having seen the show who bother to find out what that song was in that scene in episode 5 of the 2nd series. I mean, hello....that's cool. It's boosted our confidence tenfold and it doesn't feel like we're making music in a void anymore.
- When people listen to your music, how do want them to react to it? I'd like it if the melodies and sounds made them forget themselves for a moment and get into the groove, It would also be lovely if it made them feel warm and fuzzy and recognize a feeling from their own lives. Either that or think, well that's just silly but really good fun, I want to hear that again!
- Have you always known that you'd want to create music? No, perhaps Mike did, but not me. I played the piano but was rubbish at improvising; I could read music but not mess around on it. I only discovered my ability to write songs and sing when Paul from my previous band Salad encouraged me to do it as an art form. Then I realized that all that piano playing had left me with a sense of musicality that I can best express with my voice.
- Have any funny stories about performing or touring on the road? Not really, as with telling jokes, I can't tell an anecdote to save my life.
- You're stuck on the proverbial island and of course there's only one CD with you. Which one would it be? Elliot Smith - Figure 8 (such a talent) or Madonna - American Life (commercially a flop, emotionally so open).
- What are your hopes for the coming year? Finish our first album and get a few more tracks in films and TV shows and drive to Marrakech via Barcelona and Mallorca to visit friends that have made the brave move out of London.
