Interview With Josh Kramon
From January 2007
- We'll start off easy... Pizza or tacos?
Definitely pizza. If I wasn't so into being healthy I would eat it every day. - Off the top of your head, name a song that you've been listening to the most recently.
"Red Clay" by Freddie Hubbard. I've been listening to classic jazz for a while and am totally hooked. - Do you ever watch television (besides the obvious)? If so, what's your favorite show & why?
Not much. I probably should to see what other composers are up to but I usually just watch news shows. Although I do love The Sopranos and The Office but as far as I know they don't use composers. - How did you end up with the Veronica Mars gig?
Rob Thomas (the show's creator) heard a record I put out a few years ago and asked me to do the Pilot. The score for the show ended up being quite different than my record but I guess there were elements there that he was drawn to. - What impact has it had on getting other job offers or more recognition?
It's definitely been great for recognition but since the style of the score is so different than most TV music, I've had to work a bit harder to convince producers that I can do other things as well. But it hasn't actually stopped me from getting other gigs. If anything it's helped. - Your musical composition style for Veronica Mars is very different (at least in my opinion) from the norm. How did you come up with the style of music for the show?
Rob wanted a sort of modern noir sound so I really focused on mixing old and new orchestration. Things like Vibraphone, Rhodes piano and strings with modern synths and drum loops. I also process a lot of the sounds which they didn't have in the 60's when the noir thing was real big. - Have you always known that you'd want to create music?
Oh yeah. Since I was about four I've been playing and writing music and never wanted to do anything else with my life. - Have any funny stories about performing, touring, or meeting deadlines?
I hate to let you guys down on this one but when I was in the band (The Imposters) and touring there were lot's of great stories but none that I would be allowed (or that would be appropriate) to tell due to the "code of silence" you take on the road. And there's nothing funny about meeting deadlines. - You're stuck on the proverbial island and of course there's only one CD with you. Which one would it be?
That's a very tough question since between my albums (yes vinyl), CD's and iTunes library, we're talking about close to three thousand records but I guess it would be "Revolver" by The Beatles. It had so many styles on it and was so ahead of it's time. "Tomorrow Never Knows" was pretty much trance music and it was 1966!! - What are your hopes for the coming year?
For the world I would love to see less violence, hunger and just our state of consciousness raised a few notches. For myself, I'm really looking forward to my new record that's coming out early this year. It's taken me three years to finish and I'm really proud of it.
